My formative musical experiences involved just as much playing in rock bands as it did playing in orchestras and wind ensembles. Throughout my teens and early 20s (early 90s and 00s), I played in bands around South Florida while also studying classical music. When I ventured to Boston for grad school, my focus was really composing chamber music and I stopped playing in bands for about a decade.
Moving to Athens, Georgia (a bona fide Indie Music Mecca), it would make sense to put a toe back into the songwriting/indie rock pool. But I was too busy with the teaching, composing, and changing diapers to play in bands again. When I had a sudden itch to do more songwriting during the pandemic, a lot of my song ideas had a good bit of crossover with my classical compositions: playing with electronics, wonky time signatures, old classic synthesizers and new microtonal electronic instruments I was building in max patches. I decided to record and release a rather eclectic collection of songs under the name Vectory Gardens, which released an inaugural self-titled album in early 2026.
After all the songs were written and demos recorded, I connected with drummer Will Shine and saxophonist/electronics wizard/musical polymath Brandon Quarles to complete the album, with some additional bass provided by Daniel Pina. A bit from a local review:

Hailing from Athens Georgia, Vectory Gardens is a melange of seasoned and adventurous musicians brought together by a belief that good music isn’t just an emotional experience or an intellectual experience, but a complete experience. Drawing on influences from post-rock, indie rock, modern folk, to jazz, electronic and the avant garde, Vectory Gardens’ self-titled debut album weaves classic synths and off-kilter glitch alongside an acoustic tapestry of guitars, piano, and layered vocals, all coherently bound together by composer Peter Van Zandt Lane’s meticulously crafted songwriting.
Tracks like (2-3-4)5tr4nge_Times, company_dime and the the_procrastination_committee! shape poignant songs around post-minimalism-influenced rhythmic processes and Lane’s unique concept of modulating micro-meter, while songs like saint_helene and and souvenir fully embrace pop songwriting while drawing on sonic artifacts of the '80s and '90s. Despite regular forays into math-rock sensibilities and the occasional microtonal vignette, the music of Vectory Gardens is never more cerebral than it is emotive. Made by artists who aren’t afraid of a catchy hook nor an experimental risk, this deeply original album of eclectic music is sure to reward multiple listenings with layers of compelling new details to discover.
